Howls and acrid screams pierce the night. Strange happenings are being reported,
not only from the countryside but in the towns and villages as well. Two battalions of three companies, with the Crown Prince as their commanding officer. The regiment will be known as the "Prince's Own." Being a former guard officer the Prince chose green jackets with red collars and cuffs for the regiments uniform. Prior to the Prince leaving Berlin, he arranged the purchase of rifles to arm his regiment. Each jaeger is promised a rifle to keep as a reward for service. The Prince is building a small barracks for the regiment at the Royal Army camp in Huack. In normal times only a single battalion shall be on duty at a time, the rest will be placed on half pay and sent home. In times of war both battalions will be available for march. If the Prince has his way, the Jaegers will be the new rapid strike force of the Royal Army. Prince Albrecht, whom had already seen combat in the Royal Army of Saxe-Huack as a Captain of Grenadier Guards, was thrust into battle on several occasions during his tour in the Prussian Army. That night the Duke ordered a royal banquet, during which the Crown Prince was promoted to colonel in his father's Royal Army.

After the dinner and an appropriate amount of time spent with family and friends the Crown Prince was summoned to the west wing of Fortenbras Palace which houses the Royal General Staff. Inside the Prince found the Duke, General Bach, Colonel Vorbeck, Captain Stueben, Colonel Kliest and the many other officers waiting for his briefing. Colonel Prince Albrecht gave a detailed report of his experiences in the Prussian Army and was quite eager to suggest the creation of an Jaeger Battalion as the newest addition to the Royal Army. Everyone agreed and the Prince was chosen as it's commander. Thus that night, on paper, the 1st Jaeger Bn was born. The Prince set about filling it's ranks immediately.

The Huack-Turkoslavia Wars

I have started another imaginations campaign. At the first session of the National Assembly the Revolutionary Council officially disbanded, although it's members were now elected to the Assembly. The Assembly elected Ludwig Stauffenberg Prime Minister and he assembled his cabinet in the west wing of the Margrave's palace. The Assembly also promoted Albert Brendel to Brigadier General and left the army in his capable hands. While in Prussia the Baron met and dined with Crown Prince Albrecht whom is currently on military assignment in Berlin whom sends his greetings and report to his father the Duke. Before leaving the Prince warned the Baron that trouble was afoot, that the political climate in Berlin was changing.

Baron von Jagow also met with several Prussian ministers whom were most interested in how the "crusade" against Bittburg was proceeding. The Baron informed them of the current situation in Bittburg and of the mandate given the Duke by the Holy See in Rome. The Prussian ministers advised the Baron that the Duke should bring his army home and end the war. The Baron made queries as to why we should do such a thing and it was revealed to him that strong protestant forces inside Prussia and out desired to see Bittburg throw off the shackles of the Catholic church. The Baron nodded his understanding but wanted to put forth his sovereign's claim as the Margrave of Bittburg to the assembled ministers. That they did not question and they seemed favorable towards this disposition and that he should seek his claim, just not on the orders of Rome. As far as they were now concerned, Rome should no longer have any hand in the affairs of state within the Reich.

On hearing his prime minister's words, the Duke retired to his library to contemplate his decision. The next morning the Duke assembled his court and from his golden eagle throne ordered the Royal General Staff to bring the army within the newly drawn borders of Saxe-Huack. That the army should garrison the city of Munchhausen and await there for further instruction. Second that a peace delegation be led by Prime Minister von Jagow accompanied by his staff and a company of Liebstandarte Guards.

The peace settlement plan included two parts. The first that the nature and cause of the current war was that of religious reasons and that for the same reasons should end. To achieve this end if the Revolutionary Council of Bittburg would release the Bishop of Bittburg unharmed, that Saxe-Huack would end all current military operations against Bittburg. That the city of Munchhausen had in it's own accord sworn fealty to the ducal crown and was now a royal estate and no claim should be put forth against it. The second part of the settlement was a demand that the Revolutionary Council recognize Duke Augustus as Margrave of Bittburg, disband, and submit to the Duke's mercy.

The peace conference took place in the village of Furth, midway between Munchhausen and Bittburg. In attendance were the Saxe-Huack delegation, the Revolutionary Council, Colonel von Vorbeck, Colonel Brendel, whom eyed one another with calculating curiosity, and ministers from Prussia, Bavaria and France. While the delegates debated the settlement Colonel von Vorbeck took the time to casually stroll through the village of Furth, paying close attention to the units of the Revolutionary Army that had accompanied their colonel to the peace process and realized that Bittburg now had regular, uniformed line infantry in it's army. He also noticed a pair of their officers discussing the current events in English.

After hours of deliberation the peace settlement was made. The Bishop of Bittburg would be freed and allowed to return to his church and throne in the city, but no longer would he be allowed to meddle in affairs of state. Any attempt by the bishop to raise an army or organize resistance to the revolution would result in the bishop being forcibly exiled from the state and his property forfeit. The City of Munchhausen was now a recognized estate of Saxe-Huack and the Frei Stadt of Bittburg was now officially recognized by Prussia, Bavaria and France. The second part of the peace plan, as expected, was summarily rejected by the ministers of Bittburg.

Bittburg Appoints New Army Commander

The Hon. Ludwig Stauffenberg, recently appointed Prime Minister of the Revolutionary Council today promoted Albert Brendel to Colonel and commander of the Union Army of Bittburg. Born and raised in Bittburg. Albert left home 8 years ago for England to seek adventure. Albert spent the last 5 years in India where he served as a captain in the military forces of the East India Company.

Also while in session, as his first act Colonel Brendel demanded that the Council make a proclamation; Order #1 announcing that all able bodied men and women of Bittburg and the surrounding areas to report for military duty. Whether sewing uniforms, aiding the sick, cooking, chopping wood or fighting, all would be needed to win this fight and stop the army of Saxe-Huack from marching into the capital and ending the dream of a free republic in the heart of Europe.

Colonel Brendel is not alone in his challenge to equip and train an adequate army to fight Saxe-Huack. The Colonel brought several close friends with him from India whom he has appointed as officers and given staff and command positions. He also sent another comrade from India back there with funds to purchase artillery pieces from the East India Company.

The Duke's Instructions 1765

The Royal General Staff has issued new instructions for the operation and conduct of the Royal Army. He used his close friendship with the Duke to persuade him to invest in the purchase of a frigate. Captain Stueben arranged the purchase, sailed and lead the scientist, merchants, explorers and crew of the HMS Diekirch, expedition to the dark continent of Africa, the first Saxe-Huack exploration of the continent. This journey more than paid for both the vessel, the trip and future treks back to Africa and beyond. This first adventure has established the Royal Navy as an indispensable asset to the Duke and his government and Baron von Stueben as a power within the royal court.

First Officer, HMS Diekirch, Royal Navy
Lt. A group of wealthy men from Bittburg made their way in secret to Rome. Shortly thereafter a letter from the Holy See arrives at Fortenbras Palace. The letter acknowledges that any lands gained by our Lord Augustus will be recognized as his rightful property and estate except for those lands immediately surrounding the city of Bittburg itself. The letter was sealed with the papal signet. Seizing upon this the Royal General Staff issued the following proclamation.

From His Royal Majesty, Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Huack, Margrave of Bittburg and Rightful Prince of Ostenburg.

In the Name of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. So be it.

To all who shall see these presents, greetings.

Article 1. Be it known that a state of war exists between the Duchy of Saxe-Huack and the Union of Bittburg. That a Holy Crusade is made to free the Bishop of Bittburg and restore him to his throne.

Article 2. There shall be no truce or parlay given with the Revolutionary Council of the Union of Bittburg nor those whom work the council's wicked will.

Article 3. Be it known that those Christian parishes and cities that desire peace and heretofore renounce any and all allegiance and ties with the Union of Bittburg and wish to surrender themselves to the mercy of His Majesty's Royal Court shall have their parish annexed within our realm, their crimes against God and our sovereign pardoned, a transitional Royal Citizenship granted and their private property guaranteed.

Article 4. Colonel von Vorbeck ordered his army to halt upon sighting the enemy just north of the town. Our forces arrayed with the Artillery Battery in the center with Colonel von Vorbeck's HQ company. The shots rang loud and true as the enemy company suffered massive losses. This emboldened more e'lean officers to order their companies to advance and as they did so our artillery helped improve their rate of march by thinning out their numbers.

By the time 4 Bittburg companies had managed to form a line against our forces 3 more of their number had been destroyed. These 4 enemy commanders exchanged rifle fire with our line and were decimated. There is a great plain just north of the town and it is expected that is where the impending battle will be fought at least that is the hope of the Revolutionary Council. They've ordered their field commanders to stop Vorbeck from taking Munchhausen at all costs.

A lot has happened since I last posted. And so today he is going to take action to ensure his throne and his family's succession. Johanniter's most trusted advisor is his prime minister Ludwig von Wessen, together they have come up with a scheme to clear the royal court of the disloyal.

Speaking from his royal dais the King issues a decree ordering the creation of an new elite unit of the Royal Army, a unit which will act both as the king's personal bodyguard but also as the enforcers of his will. Thus the Crimson Guard were born.

The uniform of the Crimson Guard shall be comprised of three colors, red, black and white. I may even make them grenadiers although I'm not sure yet. I picked up a couple more boxes of 1/72 SYW infantry a few months back but since then I joined the Old Glory Army and am thinking of going with Old Glory's SYW range for the remainder of Saxe-Huack's and Ostenburgs forces. Bittburg (if it survives) can continue on with the army I've already painted up for them.

My Fantasy Campaign

I have wresteled with the decision of wether to blog my fantasy campaign. It borders the Saxe-Huack barony of Lettow. The painting above commemorates the joy of the people of Rondeau and shows Prince Albrecht with a welcoming gesture as points back across the stream towards Saxe-Huack.) Prince Albrecht and his bodyguard had noticed a small crowd of twelve men standing opposite the stream and they rode over to greet them. As it turns out these men were the magistrates of Rondeau and had been on their way to the city of Lettow bearing a document forswearing the Union of Bittburg and formally requesting admission into the Duchy of Saxe-Huack; when good fortune smiled upon them and they noticed Prince Albrecht and thought it, to their great joy, that God had blessed them in their deed and had sent the Crown Prince of Saxe-Huack to accept their fealty and claim them as his people.

General Wilhelm von Bach, Chief of the Royal General Staff, was quoted to have said to the Prince, " I forbid you to go to war and yet you conquer while in your garden."

Duke Augustus was most pleased of this news and sent for the Rondeau magistrates and allowed them to stay in Fortenbras Palace and dine with him and his court. A few days later the county of Rondeau ceased to exist and the Principality of Rondeau was born. Thus it will be until the end of days that the Crown Prince of Saxe-Huack shall also bear the title of the Prince of Rondeau.

Cast of Characters

I thought I would reintroduce my characters and to a small extent show the pedigree of some.

DUCHY OF SAXE-HUACK

Duke Augustus von Lettow
Duke of Saxe-Huack, Margrave of Bittburg, Baron of Charmont & Rightful Prince of Ostenburg

Current monarch of Saxe-Huack. The von Lettow family have held the Barony of Charmont (western Saxe-Huack) since the creation of the duchy. Augustus's great-grandfather was raised as the Duke of Saxe-Huack by the Reich Emperor at the creation of the Duchy 140 years ago.

Wether the von Lettows have claim to the title of Margrave of Bittburg is a question that is likely to be debated in blood for some time. Duke Augustus claims that the last margrave had promised him the title before he died.

As for Augustus's claim as the Rightful Prince of Ostenburg is another sketchy matter. The von Lettow family tree has it's roots in Ostenburg. Augustus's great-grandfather was the 7th son of the King of Ostenburg. Saxe-Huack was created by the Treaty of Charmont between the Grand Duchy of Burgundy (in my fictional world it's still around) and the Empire. A pestillence in Ostenburg killed off much of the von Lettow royal family. The present Ostenburg royal family, the Johanniters are the descendants of Maria von Lettow, and her husband Prince Frederick von Johanniter son of the Duke of Hesse-Ehkel, thus the von Johanniters now rule as the Kings of Ostenburg. Maria was the 2nd child of King Ludwig von Lettow and was Augustus's great aunt. Due to constraints placed upon him by the Emperor & the Treaty of Charmont, Augustus's great-grandfather was not allowed to return home to Ostenburg and assume the throne there as the oldest surviving male heir.

This has been a thorn with the von Lettow family in Saxe-Huack for 140 years. The duke's ambitions and sense of family honor push him to assert his claim as King of Ostenburg. It should be noted that the political landscape in the Reich has changed and the ties that bound his great-grandfather to being content in Saxe-Huack are virtually non existent.

Alexander von Jagow
Prime Minister, Baron of Dinante

The von Jagow family is an ancient one in Saxe-Huack. Closest friend of the Duke, Alexander von Jagow has unquestionable loyalty and a razor sharp political intillect. He is highly respected both at home and abroad.

Jaap von Beuligen
Bishop of Saxe-Huack

His Excellency the Bishop of Saxe-Huack is an admired and well loved primate of the Holy Church in Saxe-Huack. At 89 years of age, he is one of the oldest Bishops in Europe. In times past he has served as the Dukes ambassador in more cordial affairs of state.

Brigadier General Wilhelm von Bach
Chief of the Royal General Staff, Baron of Drax

The von Bachs were awarded the Barony of Drax after the Eschian War or 1st Bittburg War. General Bach at that time commanded the army as Colonel and had distinguished himself as a great commander and diplomat.

Colonel Romulus Paul von Vorbeck
Commanding Officer Royal Army

Son of Major General Paul von Vorbeck (ret.) former Chief of the Royal General Staff. The von Vorbecks hold the Barony of Diekirch. Colonel Vorbeck previously served as the Adjutant of the Royal General Staff. Presently Colonel Vorbeck has upheld his familys honor and is proving an able commander and astute diplomat.

Prince Albrecht von Lettow, Major
Crown Prince of Saxe-Huack, Adjutant Royal General Staff

Son of the duke & heir to the throne. Prince Albrecht distinguished himself as a Captain of Grenadiers in the 1st Bittburg War. Leading his company of Grenadier Guards in a ferocious charge against enemy forces barricaded in a church. Burning a church was not an option for the pious and zealous Crown Prince. Prince Albrechts request to be reassigned as a field commander in the Grenadier Guards so that he could lead men in the present conflict was flatly refused by the Chief of the Royal General Staff saying "You have led men in combat, young prince. Now you must prepare for greater responsibilities that can only be learned here at Staff Headquarters."

Captain Manfred von Jagow
Commanding Officer, Battery A, Royal Artillery

Son of the prime minister. Captain Jagow is an adventorous and promising young officer. Like his father he has a sizeable intellect and he has a keen interest in both artillery and cavalry tactics.

Lieutenant Wilhelm Rommell
Platoon Leader, 1st Royal Infantry Regiment

Eyes are starting to turn to this young officer due to his fortitude, dependability and courage. Army officers are seeing the possibility of promise in young Rommell.

UNION OF BITTBURG

Revolutionary Council of Bittubrg
Similiar in setup to the directorate of the French Revolution. The council really stepped in it when they arrested the Bishop of Bittburg. However much lies ahead and who knows what the outcome of the present conflict will be.

Max Hiddenburg
Bishop of Bittburg

Presently under arrest in the Tower of Bittburg under trumped up charges of crimes against the people and union.

KINGDOM OF OSTENBURG

King Frederick von Johanniter III
King of Ostenburg & Duke of Hesse-Ehkel. The present monarch of Ostenburg. Questions have been raised as to his suitability to rule, indeed some of his ministers and barons are considering overtures to Duke Augustus.

Battle of Edsenburg (Bishop's Crusade or The 2nd Bittburg-Saxe-Huack War)

News has spread throught the duchy of Colonel Romulus Paul von Vorbeck's victory over the pagan army of the Union of Bittburg in the battle for the northern Bittburg county of Edsenburg. From the small village of Pree to the great city of Huack, people are celebrating and offering thanks to God that injuries to our army were slight. Indeed more people are beginning to see this latest outbreak of hostilities as a genuine Holy War with God on our side.Colonel Vorbeck setup his headquarters in the great town hall of Edsenburg and dined there that night with his officers, church clergy and local worthies whom had remained loyal to the Holy Church. The next morning the former priest of the town of Edsenburg reopened the doors to his church and held mass. Some church property was relocated but the most valuable and greater portion of it all had been ensconced to the city of Bittburg.

Colonel Vorbeck appointed a new mayor from amongst the local church congregation and detached a platoon of infantry to remain behind in the town to provide security. The rest of the army marched off on their quest to free the Bishop of Bittburg.

The picture above shows the two forces arrayed for battle from the side of the Bittburg Army which today was commanded by my son James. Normally I solo-wargame. Four elements of the 12 that made up the conscript/militia of the Revolutionary Union of Bittburg's Army were held in reserve. I had 15 elements including 1 field artillery element (Joy of an army with royal patronage). I deployed 6 line elements in the center with 3 line elements on my left with the 1 element of artillery. Also at the center were Colonel Vorbecks retinue element and 1 element of the Grenadier Guards. On my right were the 3 remaining elements of the Grenadier Guards.
The Bittburg militia moved their forces forward with their right wing occupying the trees, tavern and church seen on the right. The enemy commander moved his group forward and took cover on the side of the great hall while the left wing marched to intercept the Grenadier Guards behind the great hall.

I moved my forces up while firing rounds from my artillery at the center line of the enemy. My left wing exchanged fire with the enemy that occupied the tavern area for most of the battle. The results of the musket fire on this part of the field kept both forces from engaging in melee combat. Meanwhile my center advanced on the great hall and the Guards moved steadily forward and destroyed the left wing of the enemy and approached the flank of the enemy commander. However the battle ended (Bittburg lost 6 elements) before we could capture the enemy general as he fled the field in disgrace with his remaining forces.

My son and I enjoyed this battle. He claims that he wants to assume the identity of either Bittburg or Ostenburg and raise his own army. That would be nice, and something I would enjoy as well.

In other news I have purchased 2 more box sets of 18th century 1/72 plastic infantry; Austrian and Prussian. I have had for some time a box of AWI British cavalry but have yet found time to assemble them up. I have also been playing paintball, which is quite fun. I decided that I probably have too many hobbies and have stopped playing the MMO Eve Online. In other sadder news my father passed away on the 11th. I miss him very much.

I am debating about sending some of my lead and plastic to Sri Lanka to be painted by Fernando Enterprises, his rates seem reasonable and he has a good rep over at TMP.

Bishop of Bittburg Arrested!

The Bishop of Saxe-Huack, his Excellency Jaap von Beuligen bears a letter from the Holy See in Rome to Duke Augustus:

Your grace, as you well know of late the Revolutionary Council of Bittburg in their heretical fury have banned the church, confiscated church property and have exiled, arrested and murdered many priests and laypersons. Early last week they abandoned God and arrested the Bishop of Bittburg. If you continue to stand by and allow the heresey advocated by those of power in Bittburg to go unchecked it may spread to other lands in Christendom and the fault will lie with you the closest divinely ordained noble.

I must ask myself what kind of traitor are you? Why have I allowed someone such as you to be nourished and brought up in God's church when you would allow your Lord to be treated with such shameful contempt and attrocity by low born militants!

I call upon you as a Defender of the Faith to free the Bishop of Bittburg, and restore the Church in those lands at once. You have my blessing and may carry my standard in battle. Do not fail me Augustus.

Pius VI
By the grace of God, Pope & Servant of the Servants of God

Noticing the face of the duke growing redder, Bishop Beuligen slowly speaks. "I leave you now your grace to reflect upon your situation and indeed the situation of those you rule and remind you that there will be no baptisms, no confession, no marriages, a spiritual shutdown, the "No one from Saxe-Huack need apply" sign will be posted at the gates of heaven should you choose to do nothing. And with a courtly bow the bishop and his attendants turned to leave. Just as they reached the doors of the duke's great hall they were startled to hear the duke cry out "Bring me my arms! And convene the royal general staff! Now damn you move!" With this alarming outcry the dukes attendants were scurrying in every direction. The bishop smiled as he turned to step out between the great eagle emblazoned doors.

Update

This past Christmas my father nearly died. My company brought me home as quick as they could. He is recovering but could possibly be headed for a nursing home. So now for family reasons I have left my semi-truck and fortunatley was able to return to the corporate world.

Which means I'm home everyday and off on weekends! Which means it's time to puruse such noble and honorable activities as the glorification of war in miniature! So diplomatic packages will be going out shortly and a resumption of hostilities between the Duchy of Saxe-Huack and it's heathen enemies shall commence immediately!

Anyway I am most glad to be back among you all again and I look forward to catching up on the latest news from 18th century fictional Europe.

Army Reorganization

HUACK, Fortinbras Palace (DP) Today the Duke presided over the retirement of Major General Paul von Vorbeck, Chief of the Royal General Staff. General Vorbeck retires after serving in the Royal Army for over 45 years. Foreign dignitaries in attendance were Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz of Prussia and Lt. Colonel Charles Cornwallis of Great Britain. The Duke has appointed Brigadier Wilhelm von Bach as the new Chief of the Royal General Staff.

As I mentioned in my last update I am expanding into 15mm models in addition to my 1/72 & 25mm models. The 15mm will be my "travel" army while the bigger scales I can still enjoy at home.

Also to more realistically reflect the armed forces of a small state I have decided to reorganize the force structure of the Royal Army. These reforms will be known as the Bach Reforms, since the new Royal Army Chief implemented his new vision for the Royal Army. Prior to this I was playing that one element (stand) of models represented one battalion, I've now decided that one element shall be equal to one company. The 1st Grenadier Guards re-designated to the Grenadier Guards. The Guards will be a "half-regiment" comprised of an over-sized battalion of 5 companies. The Lieb Grenadiers are restructured into one company that draws it's members from the best of the Grenadier Guards.

In 15mm I have based and primed the 1st Regiment and the Regiment of Grenadier Guards and organized the regiments as fols:

1st Infantry Regiment
2 Battalions of 3 infantry companies and 1 HQ/Support company each.

Regiment of Grenadier Guards
4 grenadier companies and 1 HQ/Support company.

I will be ordering 15mm artillery, command and cavalry blister packs shortly from Essex Miniatures via Wargames Inc. I'm wanting to get my models out and have a battle, maybe have the Duke order Bach to invade Bittburg and put paid on the incredulous peasants for daring to form a non-regal form of government, this is what happens when you let the masses learn to read! (heh, just kidding) After all the Duke has claim to the title Margrave of Bittburg. However, I know that once I have that battle it'll lead to another one and that will require changes to the regional map which requires the use of a pc, and since I don't have a laptop to take with me in the truck yet, I shall wait! I'm also working on a fantasy wargame-rpg campaign using a mod of HOTT-DBF-Great Hordes in a setting thats a mixture of high & dark fantasy. This will allow either the communists of Bittburg or that vile monarch in Ostenburg respite until All Hallows Eve to see their pleasure done, for on that night I shall visit my ruin upon them.

Please note that the fantasy campaign has nothing to do with my SYW project aside from delaying battles at the present.

Update

Finally finished training and my apprenticeship. Will have my own truck by the end of the week. I have determined that I can play 15mm in my truck during my off time and evening hours. I shall take a small foldup table and a 2x2 playing board to place on top of that and battle out and paint miniatures in my "home-away-from-home" truck. I'll post pictures to more clearly show what I'm talking about.

Hard to believe that after military, college and self-employment that I would now be a truck driver but hey, moneys good and it's actually quite fun.

Revolutionary Army of the Union of Bittburg

Just finished putting the figures through the dip. My SYW toy soldiers are 25mm metal miniatures and 1/72 scale plastic soldiers.

As a father's day gift my son has finished painting 7 stands of troops for me. They are the household guards of the Duke. A company, on rotational status, is always on duty at Fortenbras Palace, however, if the Duke takes the field with the Royal Army, the entire Lieb Grenadier battalion will accompany him as his bodyguard. Historical Note: During the First Eschian War the Duke sent the battalion to serve as the bodyguard of, then, Colonel Wilhelm Bach. During the Battle of Drax, Colonel Bach sent the battalion into the fight to support the left flank of the 1st Grenadier Guards. With their army gone, the citizens of Bittburg rose up in revolt against their merchant rulers and took over the capital of Bittburg. The merchant leaders were hung and a new interim government installed. With Saxe-Huack's army securing the Barony of Pomerania before continuing their advance towards Bittburg, the new government quickly sent messengers to the Grand Duke of Burgundy asking him to serve as mediator and to Col. Bach to press him for peace.

Therefore the Congress of Bittburg was formed to bring an end to the war. Upon arriving at the congress, Duke Augustus greeted Col. Bach by saying "Hail, Wilhelm von Bach, Baron of Drax." The colonel smiled broadly, bowed then said "There are some who would say usurper." At this they both laughed then proceeded to the city hall.

The Revolutionary Committee lead by their Revolution Minister Ludwig Stauffenburg apologized for the aggression of the merchants, and asked that the Royal Army of Saxe-Huack depart their lands. It is the premise of the Revolutionary Committee to secure their borders and create a new republic from the ashes of the League. Duke Augustus concurred with the formation of a new state but refused to cede the baronies of Drax and Pomerania, claiming instead that they were his. After a heated debate, Min. Stauffenberg raised his voice in question to Duke Augustus demanding to know by what right were the baronies of Drax and Pomerania his? The duke calmly replied "Because my army is all over them." At this the representative of the Grand Duchy of Burgundy bowed his head to hide his smile and then stood and raised his hands to restore order to the council. So after several hours of negotiation peace was settled, a new nation born, and the Duchy of Saxe-Huack had grown larger.

Map of the Duchy of Saxe-Huack and the Revolutionary Union of Bittburg as outlined by the Congress of Bittburg after the end of the First Eschian War.

As a result of the heroic actions of the Royal Army several promotions were rewarded to those deserving. The following officers are noted for heroism and duty to the Duke.

1. Colonel Wilhelm Bach, promoted to Brigadier, granted the title of Baron of Drax and the legal privilege for his family of being known as "von" Bach.
2. Major Romulus Paul von Vorbeck, promoted to Colonel.
3. Captain Albrecht von Lettow, son of the Duke, promoted to Major and assigned as Adjutant Royal General Staff.
4. Lieutenant Manfred von Jagow, son of the Baron of Dinante, promoted to Captain.

Also the Barony of Pomerania is dissolved and those lands now invested with the Baron of Esch.

Royal Flag of the Duchy of Saxe-Huack

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The royal army met the mercenaries of the league and won a decisive victory over them.

For this battle I classed 4 elements of infantry as Grenadiers, 1 of which served as bodyguard to Col. Bach. The other 3 I deployed in line formation on my right flank. In the center stood Bach and the colors, the artillery and 2 elements of line infantry. On the left in line formation were the remaining 7 elements of line infanty.

The Tactical Engine deployed the mercenaries for the League of Bittburg, the bulk of their forces, 8 elements in the center with their command. One their left they had 3 elements of line infantry and on the right 3 elements of line infantry.

The Tactical Engine placed the mercs in an aggressive mood, however by having first turn my army marched within 24" of the enemy to negate their abiltiy to make any strategic moves. This coupled with the enemy's subsequent low rolls for PIPs put them at a great disadvantage. On a better note for the enemy, my artillery couldn't hit nothing but dirt the whole battle.

As you can see from the bottom picture by the end of the battle the mercs had regrouped their forces into the center while I was marching my Grenadiers into a flanking position to attack the enemy center. The flank attack never came after finishing the move, shooting began and a unit of my line infantry destroyed the enemy commander's element which was lined up directly to their front.

Battle of Drax - First Eschian War

This is the first battle in my SYW campaign! I played using the Vae Victis with my own rules mod and I used the Tactical Engine from De Bellis Solitarius for the enemy general. I used no terrain as this was a learning game for me. The artillery element is a ACW miniature but I needed it for learning purposes. I classed all troops as Line Infantry, the mercenary army had 14 elements, the royal army had 15.

The battle started out with the League Mercenary Army being very aggressive. I thought for a while that my army might lose the battle. However, right was on our side and Col. Bach led his men to victory over the heinous merchant troops of the League of Bittburg. Casulties on our side were 80 dead, 160 wounded. Estimates of enemy losses are over 160 dead and 400 wounded.

At the end of the battle the league troops abandoned the Barony of Drax and that night Col. Bach and his officers had supper at the baronial villa in the town of Drax. The royal army was welcomed as liberators by the common folk, oddly enough none of the ruling class of the barony could be found.

Zvezda 1/72 Swedish - Great Northern War - Ducal Army

My first attempt at painting 1/72 plastics. One night guard from the city of Esch was slain in the attack along with 6 refugees. The attack happened around midnight, a total of 20 refugees are reported missing. It can be concluded that this was effectively a slave raid.

The League of Bittburg's ambassador in Huack reportedly has been expelled from the duchy. Sources have it that the ambassador tried to explain away the attack as the actions of one private company and not a state act. The duke retorted "that the entire league is a corporation, nonetheless those in Bittburg are responsible for the actions of those they issue charters to."

Shortly thereafter Major General Paul von Vorbeck, Chief of the Royal General Staff, ordered the active army towards Esch under the command of Colonel Wilhelm Bach. Rumor has it that the margrave was poisoned. It is suspected that the margrave had been under the control of the merchant guilds for the last several years of his life. He was old & sickly. The death of the margrave was kept quiet. The merchant guilds in Bittburg took over the reins of the city. The merchant guild demonstrated good management of the city and since the territory was a small one things went unnoticed by the Empire. After several more towns and baronies joined the league it's power grew. Eventually through bribery or other means the Grand Duchy of Burgundy and many nobles in the Empire gave recognition to the league.

In the years since the league has prospered through their pro-merchant policies. However as the rich in the league grew richer the poor grew poorer and their freedoms dwindled. Now most of the common people in the league are serfs. The former city guard have been replaced by a small mercenary army. War is not in the leagues desires, not at the present. It interferes with profit, unless there are monetary reasons to start a war.

Map of The League of Bittburg

The First Eschian War Campaign map Version 1.1, before hostilities. A claim that goes back to the days of Charlemagne. A claim that he has cordially and honorably kept in title only, for the preservation of peace and good will between the Duchy and the League of Bittburg.

In recent days our southern city of Esch has been flooded with massive refugees fleeing the northern league lands of Drax and Pomerania. As you may now know the League of Bittburg recently passed laws declaring those two baronies as serf-lands. This was done in order to funnel "slave" labor for rich merchants, farms and the rapidly spreading industrial factories that are beginning to crop up in Europe. Many who would not be slaves have fled to our lands, particularly the city of Esch to escape this horrible fate. They call upon our duke to save them. Indeed many have sworn fealty to our duke and his appointed lords and ministers.

News of the crisis reached Fortinbras Palace and the Council of Lords. Prince Eric Von Lettow, Prime Minister and brother of the duke has presented an emergency bill in the council to extend temporary protection, food and shelter to the several hundred refugees in Esch. If the measure passes it will be presented to the duke for his approval. However the ambassador for the League of Bittburg, the hon. Herr Max Schultz has expressed his concern to our Foreign Minister and anonymous sources say that this was more a warning not to protect the "serfs" and to immediately expel them from our borders back into League lands.

Relations with the merchant dominated League and our people have always been tenuous. It seems that these recent events can only add to the strain. If you would like to help the refugees see your local baron, mayor or postal depot for more information. School children in Huack have already started collecting their pennfigs to send to Esch to help relieve the suffering there.

Zvezda & IMEX Plastic Box Sets

I bought the Swedish box set from the Great Northern War series. Notable changes and solo system as of the date of this post shown below.

Article I: Grenadiers and Infantry of the Line
The amount of privates in a company from 16, to 6 to 16.

Article II: Light Infantry
The amount of privates from 12, to 6 to 12.

Article VI: Militia
The amount of militia from 12, to 6 to 12

Article XV: Normal Musketry Fire
Short range: 0 to 12
Long range: 12 to 18, hits halved
Extreme range: 18 to 24, hits halved

Fire Effect:
Grenadiers: 1d6 per 4 men.
Line & Light Infantry in close order: 1d6 per 6 men.
Militia & Engineers: 1d6 per 8 men.

Solo System:
Enemy command & firing based on die roll. ie. 1: stay, 2. move towards objective, 3. move/fire towards nearest enemy. Enemy movement rated through die roll(s) based on unit and the units formation.

//signed//
Augustus von Lettow
By the grace of God, Duke of Saxe-Huack, Margrave of Bittburg & Baron of Chaurmont
Major General (hon.) Besides writing my own rules I'm considering the following; 1. Standing Like a Wall, 2. Mod for Armies of Arcana, 3. Vae Victis (DBx variant), Pro Gloria, and Charge! I also have looked at the Duke of Alzheim's writings on his own SYW rules and various stuff I find at Free Wargames Rules website. Vae Victis would be the easiest for me to jump right into as I am a DBx wargamer. I have printed out Charge from the Old School Wargamers Group web page and intend to read it tonight. I also want to find something that will lend itself well to solo wargaming.

I haven't decided on the scale just yet either. I'm leaning towards 15mm to build up an impressive army. However, 25mm is still my favorite. Briefly considered 40mm but that ended quick when the Prince August Rosebach molds arrived; after many castings none came out good enough to pass my QA inspection.

I've settled on a map of Luxembourg, which I will modify to suit my campaign plans. Using this map will allow for easy edit for campaign updates on PC. The main combatants will be the Duchy of Saxe-Huack, the Kingdom of Ostenburg, and possibly the League of Bittburg (a free city-state confederation.) The first to receive attention will be Saxe-Huack then Ostenburg.

My thoughts on miniatures are; 1. Minifigs, 2. RSM, 3. Essex, 4. Battle Honors, 5. Old Glory, 6. Sash & Sabre, 7. Foundry.
